RESOURCE & REFERRAL – PARENT ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST

 

What We're Looking For:

We are seeking a Parent Engagement Specialist who will work to successfully implement the objectives of the Building Stronger Families in Watts-Willowbrook Project (BSWW). The Parent Engagement Specialist will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with project participants providing technical assistance, resources and supports to strengthen social connections within the BSWW community. This also includes assisting in the operational oversight, planning, reporting functions, event logistics, as well as developing written promotional and informational materials for the project. The ideal candidate will have the following responsibilities:

  1. Work in coordination with the Community Partnership Coordinator to successfully implement the objectives of the Building Stronger Families in Watts-Willowbrook Initiative, including development and implementation of the project evaluation.
  2. Conduct grass-roots outreach of and work directly with parents and parents of young parents living in the Initiative defined catchment area, facilitating trainings and assisting them to be leaders and part of the BSWW Partnership and any appropriate task forces, creating relevant materials for them, and other similar tasks.
  3. Assist with the planning and provide logistical support for project meetings, activities and community events within the Best Start Watts-Willowbrook community, and other meetings, conferences, and events, as needed, including notifying attendees of event details, maintaining distribution lists, coordinating and ordering refreshments, and ensuring required venue/equipment is available.
  4. Establish and assist in the development of methods of communication with and between parents to promote events, activities and program information (i.e. flyers, notices, etc), being conscious of various languages and literacy abilities.
  5. Assist in scheduling meetings; completing check requests, purchase orders, maintenance requests; responding to telephone inquires; drafting correspondence and ensuring correct grammar, spelling and business format of all written communications; completing expense and other reports; and performing general clerical tasks.
  6. Design and oversee filing systems and ensure filing systems are maintained and up to date, including maintaining records of work activities e.g., meeting minutes, and the tracking and monitoring of project participants and activities.
  7. Establish, develop and maintain partnership/relationships with public, private and community organizations to promote knowledge of and access to trainings, resources and supports that are responsive to parents, parents of young parents and community members.
  8. Plan, attend, facilitate and publicize educational, networking and awareness activities and special events aimed at promoting community involvement and social connections among families.
  9. Attend and participate in project and funder meetings with Best Start and First 5 LA staff, including the data collection and evaluation team; Best Start Watts-Willowbrook Support Team; Best Start Partnership and committees; and individual partnership members and agencies, as needed.
  10. Assist in the development, implementation and evaluation of the project
  11. Participate in team and department staff meetings and professional development activities.
  12. Other duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES YOU SHOULD POSSESS:

  • Bachelor's degree in a field related to Social, Human, Family Services, Early Childhood Education or related field preferred; Associate Arts degree or relevant work experience in human services/social services or child development may be substituted for college level education.
  • Must have at least two (2) years of related experience with emphasis in family services, parent involvement & engagement, training and knowledge of family dynamics, human relations, psychology or social work; experience in initiating, implementing and coordinating activities that interface with the general public; strong experience working in diverse communities with a sensitivity to differences in multicultural settings and environments is essential.
  • Must have knowledge of community resources within the Best Start Watts Willowbrook community
  • Knowledge of social service delivery, community resources, requirements and procedures
  • Understanding of early education, parental stressors, and public social service systems
  • Project management experience preferred
  • Must have excellent English and Spanish written and verbal communication skills, customer service skills, and problem solving skills.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, self-starter, can do attitude and positive approach;
  • Must be flexible and able to manage multiple tasks and meet set deadlines.
  • Ability to work internally and externally in a collaborative, team environment;
  • Must demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and reactions of people from diverse backgrounds and with differing needs;
  • Must have a high proficiency in Microsoft Office (e.g., Publisher, Word, Excel and Outlook) and knowledge of social media activities required.
  • Requires the exercise of some independent judgment and discretion in analyzing facts and circumstances and in the determination of actions to be taken within the limits of standard practice. Involves application of broad knowledge of contract funding terms and CSI policies and procedures.
  • Must possess a valid California driver's license, have use of a motor vehicle and provide evidence of automobile liability insurance. This position is required to commute approximately 40% - 50% of the time.
