Head Start – Facilities & Maintenance Supervisor

Location: Various Sites

Job Summary 

Providing safe, healthy facilities that meets all local, state and federal regulations is crucial to the operation of a Head Start program. This position is responsible for overall management of the Head Start facilities by ensuring that all buildings meet federal, state and local licensing requirements pertinent to type of use and that all required licenses are up to date, In addition this position ensures that leases, contracts or agreements for all sites are current with appropriate signatures, oversees the maintenance and cleaning of  buildings to ensure that they are clean, safe and in useable condition and works with outside contractors and service oriented businesses, as necessary. 

The position is also responsible for maintaining a warehouse of supplies and equipment and for inventory control and distribution of items to Head Start facilities. The position conducts regular health and safety inspections of buildings and playgrounds and chairs the Head Start Safety Committee. Responsibilities include overseeing the minor maintenance of the vans, ensuring that they are kept clean and in safe repair at all times; ensuring licenses, insurance, inspections and other required permits are maintained to comply with all local, state and federal regulations, including the appropriate licensing of drivers. In addition, this position oversees any vehicle leasing and/or transportation contracts; cost-effective vehicle maintenance agreements with vendors.  

This position is responsible for ensuring clean, safe and functional facilities by performing daily cleaning and on-going maintenance activities for Head Start offices, classrooms and other spaces used by the Head Start program

Qualifications

  • A minimum of high school diploma or G.E.D. Knowledge of local health/safety regulations, ADA and OSHA requirements preferred. Successfully completes and maintains Basic First Aid and CPR certification. 
  • Two years related experience and demonstrated knowledge of general building maintenance, facilities management, or transportation systems is required.  Previous experience with lease management and contracting preferred.  Experience developing and overseeing systems for janitorial services in a business or academic setting with 3 years supervisory experience is desired. 
  • Knowledge of basic building repairs.
  • Knowledge of basic operations, tools, and terms used in building maintenance work. Knowledge of plumbing, painting and other light facility maintenance.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local safety and building code requirements.
  • Knowledge of safe and thorough basic cleaning and sanitation practices.
  • Expected to be knowledgeable of (the regulations associated with prevention of occupational disease and injury, including the exercise of universal precautions and the prevention of contamination.

  • Bilingual English/Spanish is a plus. 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is regularly required to walk.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus between source documents and the computer monitor.  The employee generally works in a normal office environment where the noise level is usually moderate to loud; however he/she may be required to work and assess projects outdoors.  He/she is expected to be trained and knowledgeable with using safety gear during and around construction. Travel by car, bus, train, or airplane as required by conference attendance, etc. where in some cases overnight travel may occur. Some exposure to communicable diseases is possible when working in office or classroom environment.  Evening and weekend may be required. 

Must possess a valid California driver's license, have use of a motor vehicle and provide evidence of automobile liability insurance. Must meet State health requirements including passing a physical examination as a condition of employment, and must provide verification of a TB clearance at the time of employment.  Mandatory CPR and Basic First Aid certificate, which employee is responsible to maintain for the duration of their employment with Head Start.

Fingerprints must be on file with the Justice Department. Official transcripts of educational attainment are required before interview is granted.
