External Affairs: Community Engagement Associate


Crystal Stairs, Inc. (CSI) is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit child care and development organization founded in 1980 whose mission is to improve the lives of families through child care services, research and advocacy. Guided by its mission and values, Crystal Stairs is dedicated to promoting programs that strengthen and assist families towards reaching self-sufficiency and providing enriched lives for their children.



The Community Engagement Associate (CEA) will coordinate the Community Voices (CV) Advocacy Program of Crystal Stairs, Inc. (CSI). Primary responsibilities will include; active recruitment, community outreach, parent/provider engagement, workshop facilitation and trainings. Develop and maintain relationships with elected officials and their staff, community stakeholders as well as monitor local, state and federal legislation on Early Care and Education. Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, the CEA will be a member of the External Affairs team and participate in departmental meetings and other activities.


  • Coordinate the overall program strategy and action with Community Voices partners LA Countywide. Responsible for the oversight and organization of the agencies Advocacy efforts for parents/child care providers and community stakeholders
  • Actively recruit parents/providers, build and maintain strong relationships within the Crystal Stairs service area and throughout Los Angeles County
  • Coordinate and facilitate monthly workshops and trainings in multi-locations throughout LA County. Coordinate local and state legislative visits and special events. Work closely with the Director to identify and develop Community Voices leaders that will act as Ambassadors
  • Coordinate and lead Advocacy events; Stand for Children Day in Sacramento, CA and LA County Stand for Children Day in Los Angeles
  • Attend community meetings, commission and other relevant events that will increase the visibility of Community Voices
  • Coordinate all local and state travel for Community Voices Advocates on a monthly and as needed basis. Serve a liaison between the Child Care Alliance of Los Angeles (Alliance) and other community stakeholders
  • Develop and maintain an active database of participants and community partners. Manage the master calendar of Community Voices activities, legislative and community calendars
  • Strengthen the Community Voices program by building strategic partnerships and providing technical assistance to Alliance agencies to development parent leaders; community organizing strategies and parent recruitment and leadership development
  • Track relevant local, state and federal legislation on early care and education in order to deliver effective trainings to parents/child care providers on issues that may impact low-income families LA Countywide. Work closely with the Civic Engagement & Public Policy Associate to stay abreast of local, state and federal policy issues and participate in the agencies Public Policy Committee
  • Coordinate overall administrative duties for the CV program, including program budget, keeping accurate records and providing detailed reports to funders and Crystal Stairs leadership
  • Assist in the development of program marketing materials, electronic newsletter, social media content and keep all communication materials updated
  • Communicate consistently across all Alliance agencies and help them leverage their collective resources
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • Self-driven and motivated in the areas of community presence and organizing
  • Position requires a high degree of professionalism, judgment, ethics, integrity, maturity, and ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • High level of interpersonal skills with ambition and passion for working with diverse low-income communities
  • Must exercise sound judgment in determining which matters require immediate attention.
  • Must have the ability to collaborate and develop new relatinships and position onself in key areas
  • Bachelor's degree in Communications, Political Science or related field required.
  • Minimum five years related experience. Non-profit experience a plus. 
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends
  • Abilityt o travel locally and to Washington, D.C.
  • Must have reliable transportation and insurance
